The beach was crowded. A man in denim overalls carried a catch of fresh fish toward the barbeque setup table. He waved
the fish in front of his buddy, who was lighting the grill. He set them on their table. His friend asked where the
steaks were. The man told him to forget it because he was still coughing up minced meat from the last time he cooked. His
friend told him in a sarcastic way that his remark was very funny. He took fluid from the table. He told him that
if he was them he would seriously considering making a trip to the store unless he planned on eating sushi. Meanwhile, Sean
and Leigh were giving a water safety training lecture session. Sean was doing the work while Leigh looked on to assist.
At the grill, the friend working on the grill really poured on a lot of fluid. His buddy stopped him. He was
putting way too much on the coals. His friend told him to back off as he grabbed a box of wooden stick matches. He held
the whole box of matches over the grill while unwittingly striking one on the box's side. The overuse of fluid caused
the match's tiny flame to react with the box. Violent flames resulted. He told him to back up when the flames were shooting
up, but it was too late. The flames shot up and the man was suddenly on fire. The man was running out of control causing
oxygen to feed the flames. The man could not stop his engulfed friend from running and began screaming for help. He started
to yell for help.
Sean continued his lecture water safety training session. Sean saw the man running in his vain attempt to escape the flames. He
quickly made his way out toward the man. He told Leigh to get the fire extinguisher. He told Leigh on his way out. Sean
grabbed a blanket from a table while running to catch the man. Sean yelled. A motorcyclist rode up to the engulfed man
and rolled off in front of the victim. The cyclist grabbed the victim's legs, causing his fall to the ground. This enabled
Sean to cover the victim with the blanket. The cyclist helped.
The two men rolled the victim around. Uncovering the man, the flames were now out, but the victim was left with burns.
His face revealed that he was in severe pain. The cyclist stood up while Sean took over. Leigh came running up with the
fire extinguisher. Leigh yelled to the cyclist that his jacket was burning while she sprayed him! She told Sean that
paramedics were on the way!
While Leigh tended to the cyclist, taking off his jacket to get to the burned site, Sean pulled out his radio. "DISPATCH
ALERT THE HOSPITAL! WE'VE GOT A BURN VICTIM! 2ND AND 3RD DEGREE BURNS ON THE HANDS AND CHEST! AIRWAY'S CLEAR! I'LL
KEEP HIM STABILIZED!"
After getting the acknowledgment from the dispatch, Sean ran back to the victim to comfort him. He was going to be
O.K. They were going to get him to the hospital to get him taken care of. He was going to stay right
here with him. Sean assured him, caressing a shoulder that was not burned. Leigh asked the cyclist if he was O.K. He
asked if she was going to pin a medal on him, to break the ice. She told him that she was fresh out of medals!
She offered a couple of stitches instead while examining the wounds on his head. Sean told the cyclist that she
was right while looking over in their direction. The paramedics would fix him up when they get there.
The cyclist asked Leigh for her name. She gave him that bit of information. He told her that his was Sam Parks.
He was trying to shift his eyes in an attempt to see her. Leigh turned his head back around as she worked. She complimented
him on his nice moves on the bike. Next time try a helmet. Sean kept looking over at the two with great interest. He
knew that Sam Parks was in pursuit. Although his feelings for Leigh began to surface, he was still afraid to show them. Yet
he said nothing. Sam asked why did he feel like he was still on fire? He leaned against her. She eased
him back up, sighing. She too knew that Sam was pursuing her. Sam laughed. But Sean who was still looking on rolled
his eyes with a not-so-pleased expression.
Kekoa paddled a kayak, showing the trainees how to get a victim to shore through a break. Once Kekoa arrived at the
shoreline, she got out. She told them that when you go through the break, timing was everything. While unstrapping her dummy
victim from the kayak, she told them catch the right wave and stay with it all the way in. The last thing you want to
do is get caught in the impact zone and cause further injury to your victim. She brought the victim in. Afterward
she held up her paddle as a signal to the trainee on the water to try it. She told him to bring it in! Watch the
break! The trainee got caught in the wave and was wiped out. A young blonde trainee quickly went out to get him
without thinking. She informed them that she would get him.
Kekoa yelled out to Lena in an attempt to stop her. It was too late and she had to go in after the girl. They both swam
out to the site and Kekoa yelled after Lena to watch the kayak and to stay away from the ski! It had flipped over and
a wave was carrying it toward Lena's head. Kekoa quickly submerged and had just enough time to grab the girl's leg to pull
her under. This prevented her from getting hit. After the kayak passed over them, the two surfaced. Kekoa
asked Lena if she was O.K. Lena told her that she was and then thanked her. She quickly swam away, back to
shore. Kekoa soon headed back herself. J.D. headed out and took the kayak from Kekoa. He carried it in the rest
of the way. He stated that he was sure that her dentist was grateful.
Kekoa said that they come to Hawaii and think they know the water. But here, it's a whole different ball game. You
had to learn how to read the signs. J.D. assured her that they would learn. Why wouldn't they? She always
set a great example. Kekoa looked at him and smiled. She told him that he was cute when he hit on a girl. They
continued up the sand as J.D. seemed pleased. He tried to ask her out and told her that he scored some VIP
passes to the to The Waikiki. He asked if she wanted to come. Kekoa told him that she couldn't. Family
dinner. She apologized politely.
Family dinners, J.D. said that he missed those! He was hopeful that she would take the hint and invite him. Kekoa
told him that it was an obligation, not a choice. Tanakas only. A now uniformed Sam pulled up wildly into The
Training Center's parking area. "YEAH!" The pilot exclaimed loudly. He got out of the red sports car with a
potted flower plant. The noisy creature sang a song. "I'M GONNA FLY MY BABY UPTOWN! GONNA LIGHT MY BABY ALL AROUND!" He
walked toward Sean and Leigh. Sean remarked that they fixed his head. They should have fixed that leg in his foot.
Sam apologized. He had a plane to catch. Sam smiled. Leigh laughed. She asked if the flowers were for her. He
told her no, they were for Sean. He was the one who did all the hard work. He handed the flowers to Sean. "Thanks,
bro! You shouldn't have." Sean said. "Why did you?"
Sam was speechless and sort of shrugged his shoulders. Leigh told Sam that it was a nice touch. She was simply charmed
by Sam's gesture. She admitted that she loved it when men gave each other flowers. Sean walked away from the
two. Sam joked that he bet that sealed it for him. Now he'll want him in bed. Leigh told Sam not to expect a thank
you card. Sam told Leigh that he had to fly up high for the night. He thought maybe she would like to
come along. He knew this place on the wayward side that made the best plate luncheon on the Island. Leigh told
him that she was sorry, but she was on duty until 4:00! Sam did not give up. He asked her about dinner.
"Come on, I wanna see you lady! I don't care where the meal is!" Sam said. "It can be a bookshop, it can be a coffee
shop! Even a church! I don't care! I wanna see you!" He took Leigh's hand and gave her a spin. "So I'll see you!"
Sam had to leave for his flight. When he took off, she laughed and then walked toward Headquarters. Sean approached her.
He was concerned. She wasn't thinking about going out with him! Leigh came back with "You got a better proposition?"
She then walked away. Sean was silent and then threw the flowers in the closest garbage container.
On the beach, Kekoa approached three rowdy boys on her patrol. They were loud with their boom-box blasting loudly.
It was disturbing everyone around them. She asked them to turn down the loud music and put the beer away. There
was no drinking on the beach. Suddenly a Hawaiian girl popped up and threw an arm around one of the boys. She introduced
her cousin Kekoa to her friends. After the introduction, she had a word in private with Kekoa. She told her to give
her a break when Kekoa told her that she already got complaints.
Nani told Kekoa that the born-again virgin thing is running dry. She was just angry about the wet T-Shirt
thing last week. Kekoa warned her that she was totally wasted. She knew that anything could
have happened to her.
Nani told her not with J.D. there. She exclaimed that he was such a hottie! To snatch him up before some
other ticket takes him. Kekoa told what she referred to as a naughty girl not to even go there. She worked with
J.D. Nani said the two of them should hook up already and get it over with. Nani returned to the boys. Later
that evening at the Tanaka's extravagant home, dinner and discussion started. While Kekoa helped her mother with the
meal, Mrs. Tanaka told Nani to sit. Mr. Tanaka was already sitting at the head of the table.
Nani told her uncle how handsome he looked. She kissed his temple. She appeared sweet and innocent. She
wore modest clothing. Her language was normal instead of slang overkill. Things that Mr. Tanaka would never approve.
He thanked Nani and told her that he had some news. He had talked to her parents today and her father's business
in San Francisco was going a little slow. So, she was welcomed to continue her stay with them next week Nani
told him that she didn't want to be too much trouble. Mr. Tanaka assured her that she wouldn't. She was always
welcome in their house.
Kekoa approached the table to offer him tea and placed the container on the table before sitting down. She sat on the opposite
side of the table to face Nani. He ignored Kekoa in disappointment and returned his attention to Nani. He asked how her studies
were going. Nani told him that she decided to take his advice. She would take economics instead of
philosophy. Mr. Tanaka was pleased. She would find that a background in finance would get her farther
than play dough. And MUCH farther than playing at the beach all day. He cut his eyes in Kekoa's direction. Kekoa told
him that she didn't play! They save lives!
"We save lives!" Mr. Tanaka mocked her words. He told Kekoa that she liked to save lives. Why not be like
her cousin, Nani. Go to school! Study hard. Become a doctor! Nani felt bad about Mr. Tanaka chewing
Kekoa out. Comparing them even though they were two completely different personalities. Kekoa felt belittled and unappreciated.
Mr. Tanaka continued. Where was she going to be twenty years from now? In some lifeguard tower making babies with
a beach bum? Mrs. Tanaka interrupted. She pleaded with him that for once, can they have dinner without arguments?
She placed a hand on her husband's shoulder.
Mr. Tanaka nodded, and drank his tea. The doorbell rang! Nani spoke up that she hoped that they didn't mind that
she invited a friend. Kekoa got up to answer it. Her father's eyes narrowed into angry slits as he watched her go. To
Kekoa's surprised, it was J.D.! She could see him through the door's peep window. She opened the door. Her
mouth parted and stayed that way until after he spoke. He greeted her and apologized for being late. Traffic was backed
up on the highway. He had hoped that they weren't waiting for him. Kekoa looked at her Dad, who was staring
at her. Nani approached the door to welcome him in. She was really glad that he could make it!
J.D. had a lei. The wrong type! He didn't know that different ones were used for different occasions. His was
used for a funeral. He came in to greet Mrs. Tanaka, who was coming toward the door. "You must be Mrs. Tanaka," he said
with his arms opened. J.D. placed the lei over her head and around he neck. He then gave her a warm hug and kiss.
"J.D. Darius. It's so nice to meet you!" "Your shoes," Kekoa said.
"Yeah," J.D. said completely clueless. "Yeah, its the weirdest shoes." Mr. Tanaka approached him. "Mr. Tanaka,
its such a pleasure to meet you sir." He shook his hand. Kekoa and her mother made faces of caution, hoping that there
would be no trouble. Kekoa? Mr. Tanaka asked. She informed her father that he worked with her. She would not be
able to hid that fact. He was bound to find out sooner or later. Another Lifeguard! Mr. Tanaka said in disgust
before walking away. J.D. turned to look at him. Mrs. Tanaka thanked him for the beautiful yellow flower, referring
to the lei. "Ahhh, dont mention it!" He said. She told him that she would fix him a plate.
"That'll be great! Thank you!" J.D. said smiling. After Mrs. Tanaka left, J.D. stepped back and looked around. "Wow!
This place is a mansion! You never told me you were rich!" He nudged her smiling as if she was one of the guys. She
told J.D that it belonged to her father. She just lived there. She looked down at his feet and told him to
take off his shoes. It suddenly clicked why no one else had any on. He quickly took them off. Nani stood next to
the chair for J.D. to sit in. It was the closest to Mr. Tanaka. "J.D., sit next to Kekoa." Nani said.
J.D. brought his shoes over instead of leaving them at the door. He really was clueless in a cute way. He genuinely did
not know all the Hawaiian customs yet. He dropped his shoes on the floor next to the table. Kekoa was in the second
seat. Mrs. Tanaka placed a plate of food before him. J.D. thanked Mrs. Tanaka, looking up at her. He then picked
up the chop sticks as he looked at Mr. Tanaka. He compemented him on how beautiful his house was. Of course, Mr.
Tanaka said. He imformed him that it was one of the last original Plantation sugar cane houses left on the island. Frowning,
J.D. was struggling with the chop sticks. They all noticed. He stabbed his food in order to pick it up.
Mrs Tanaka asked him if he would you like a fork. He assured her no that he was fine. He thanked her. He
popped it into his mouth with his hand. Nani tried to lighten the mood. She told everyone that J.D. was good with
his hands. Every time Ishe saw him on the beach or down at the docks, he was always fixing boats, engines or suping up
Jet Skis. Kekoa looked a Nani with controlled anger. Mr. Tanaka's face brightened. "Ahhh, so you have interest
in engineering." Kekoa stared at J.D and he quickly took the napkin from his neck. He explained tht his Dad
was a mechanic with food still in his mouth. He went on to say that he watched him take things apart. He guessed
that it stuck with him.
So Mr. Tanaka asked J.D that if working as a lifeguard is just a way to save for college. Maybe study for technology? J.D.
told him not really! He used it in his work. He was very happy doing what he was doing. Disappointment
returned to Mr. Tanaka's face. He knew what that attachment was. He stated that his daughter had no respect for
education either. J.D. looked from Mr. Tanaka to Kekoa. Kekoa was suffering from the pain of embarrassment. J.D.
spoke up stating that he thought that Kekoa was one of the finest lifeguards he has ever worked with. She
knew these waters better than anyone on the team. They were all learning a lot from her. Kekoa looked at Nani and
and asked her if she could come into the kitchen and help her? Now? When they were alone, Kekoa had her say.
She question why Nani asked J.D. over without asking her? She knew that her father would hate him.
"Don't have a cow, man. I was only trying to improve your social life." Nani explained. Mrs. Tanaka made
her way into the kitchen between them. I just "love" the way this girl talks to Kekoa. Calling
her "man." Something that most women would find highly offensive. This girl has a lot to learn. The guys she hangs around
with seem to be after only one thing and it is surprising that she seems to be so clueless.
Nani soon found herself in trouble when she went out with the frat boys. Since she had always imitated a clinging
vine when she was with them, she didn't think anything about it. They are on grounds close to a cliff. She spreaded out
her blanket to lay on and the boys were grouped talking and scheming. They were soon surrounding her. When they made advances
to take off her clothing, she resisted. She soon found out what their intensions were. She tried to defend herself against
the boys. In doing so, she backed up against the edge of the cliff. To escape, she took the high jump into the water. Once
she surfaced, she began to swim in search for help. The boys were eager to stop her and made way to their boat. They could
not let word could not get out about their intensions to gang-rape her.
Meanwhile, Nani swam out to the open ocean. She saw someone coming on a Jet Ski. She waved frantically to signal that she
needed help. It was Kekoa on ocean duty. Kekoa picked her up and saw that her cousin was crying uncontrollably. She asked
what happened. She told Kekoa about her "friends." How they tried to rape her. Kekoa comforted her.
Meanwhile, Leigh and Sam went hang gliding. He got so excited that he tried a new maneuver. Leigh feared the worse as he
crashed. She had to rescue him against the rough elements. After she managed to get him to safety, all he could do was smile
and say, "What a ride!" He would not listen to reason. She realized that Sean was right about Sam being an adrineline junkie.
He was a danger to himself as to anyone around him.
When Kekoa and Nani returned
to shore, Kekoa encouraged her to press charges. But when the police came, Nani backed out, not filing any charges. The boys
had given her threatening looks for her to keep her mouth closed. And that she did. Kekoa was stunned. And Mr. Tanaka had
showed up. Since Nani had not filed any charges and denied that they had attacked her, he blamed Kekoa for the whole incident.
Stating that she was a bad influence on Nani. With Nani wrapped in a blanket for warmth, Mr. Tanaka placed a comforting arm
around the girl and lead her away to his car. This left Kekoa both stunned and disappointed. The boys felt relief as they
remarked that she was "a good little sister in keeping her mouth shut."
An interuption here. Nani was not only intimidated by the boys, she was afraid of what her uncle would think of her. Her
naughty behavior would have been exposed as well. Mr. Tanaka thought the world of Nani, as if she was the perfect daughter.
She needed to keep her bad behavior unknown to him. But as for the attack, you just can't keep things like this a secret.
She owed it to herself and other girls out there. Nani should have filed charges. She was extremely lucky to get away. But
what if she had been unable to? Pressing charges would have rightfully exposed the guilty party as rapists. It would have
served as a warning to all of those other girls out there. Now they are free to victimize another unsuspecting girl. Will
the next one be able to get away?
Leigh had to confront Sam. He had to realize that Leigh was not going to date him after what had happened. She was not
in love with him. Later, Sean and Leigh had an arguement. They had agreed to keep their work and private lives separate.
At The Tropics Bar that night, the frat boys had enough gall to show up instead of keeping a low profile after
what had happened. They saw Kekoa and tried to make advances. She played along and lead them away from the crowd where J.D.
and Sean were waiting for them. Now it was the boys turn to feel intimidated. Sean and J.D. threatened the boys that if they
ever tried to lay a hand on Kekoa or any other girl, they would have to answer to them. They understood and ran from The
Tropics Bar.
I gave this one 2 rescue cans simply because the Leigh-Sam-Sean storyline kept this episode alive. The acting was
good. I had to admit that I watched this one in two parts. The Leigh and Sean situation gets more interesting. But you
would have to wonder if the writers had ever planned to make them a couple. I guess that we will find out soon enough.
My Score: 1 Rescue Can
