Restructuring The Show
A Decision That Didn't Swim Well With Faithful Fans!
The show's constant changes caused lackluster ratings by its 9th season.
Executive Producer Gregory J. Bonann wanted to move the show to his first choice, Australia where lifeguards
are volunteers, not paid workers. He wanted to place attention on surfers. There were problems in getting permissions in filming
there. The citizens there didn't want the show ruining its beautiful beaches.
Unsuccessful to garner breathtaking Australia, Greg took the show to
Hawaii. The agreements made with the mayor and other government officials of state ensured a pure Hawaiian environment
unchanged. The surf was huge and was where many professional surfing cometitions were held. A statewide campaign was
held to search for Hawaiian actors to add to the cast as lifeguards. Lovely Stacy Kamano was chosen for the female side. A
young attractive model, (name) was chosen for the male side. And because he looked so good, a handsome, muscular local firefighter,
Kala'i Miller was also chosen. He was added as a recurring cast member.
The returning cast at that time was David Hasselhoff, Michael Bergin, Brooke Burns
and Michael Newman returned. New members included Jason Brooks and (name). The show sported a completely different look. The
women wore yellow swimsuits and the men-red knee type shorts with yellow piping down the sides.
With the show shifting from Mitch's dream to become a lifeguard (and he knew what he wanted
to be long before leaving high school), to his dream to opening a lifeguard training
center was a bit too unbelievable for fans to digest.
