DAVID HASSELHOFF RUSHED TO EISENHOWER MEDICAL CENTER'S EMERGENCY ROOM!
It began at the end of the run of his broadway debut in Jekyll &
Hyde, which closed January 7, 2001. With Baywatch and Jekyll & Hyde over, he wondered where to
concentrate his energies next. David has had a drinking problem for
a long time. It climaxed after Jekyll & Hyde.
Realizing that he had a problem with alcohol, he checked himself into
the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage in June 2001. He left after only one day. He then booked a room at the Desert
Springs Marriott. He immediately began drinking from a minibar packed with gin, rum, cognac, beer and wine.
The next morning, he was rushed by ambulance to the emergency room at nearby
Eisenhower Medical Center. When he regained consciousness, he thought that he had hit rock bottom. He thought, "You're
letting yourself down, you're letting your family down, you've got to seek help." He knew that everything would come out in
the open when he had checked into Betty Ford. David figured that he would rather have the couple of days of
bad press than be in the newspapers saying that he has a DUI or that he had killed somebody.
He admitted that the hardest part was the publicity that caused pain for
his wife, actress Pamela Bach and their daughters, Taylor Ann and Hayley. He credits them with
supporting him through his ordeal. He is learning to deal with his recovery one day at a time. During the production of Baywatch
Hawaii Wedding, he attended daily meetings with recovering alcoholics.
He has stated, "When you have a problem, you have to take care of it. I
was so afraid of what people think, what it would do to me, my family, my career." He realized that confronting his problem
was a blessing.
